Personal and Family Law in Bangladesh
Personal and family law in Bangladesh is shaped by both civil statutes and religious personal law. Muslim personal law (derived from the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance, 1961 and the Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) Act, 1974) applies to Muslim citizens in matters of marriage, divorce, dower, and inheritance. Hindus, Christians, and members of other faiths are governed by their respective personal law statutes or the general civil law. Property transactions are governed by the Registration Act, 1908, the Transfer of Property Act, 1882, and the State Acquisition and Tenancy Act, 1950.
