The Bangladesh Labour Rules, 2015 were amended by S.R.O. No. 284-Law/2022, published in the Bangladesh Gazette on 1 September 2022 (gazette pages 14879–14902). Mandatory Compliance Procedures
- Notice of Pregnancy: Under Section 47(1), the employee must give notice to the employer (orally or in writing) that she expects to be confined within eight weeks.

- Payment Schedule: According to Section 48(2), the benefit for the pre-natal period must be paid within three working days of the notice, and the post-natal portion within three working days of proof of birth.
- Prohibition of Dismissal: Section 50 strictly prohibits an employer from dismissing or discharging a woman within six months before and eight weeks after her delivery to avoid maternity benefit obligations.

What is the total duration of maternity leave in Bangladesh?
Under Section 46(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, a woman is entitled to a total of 16 weeks of maternity leave, divided into 8 weeks before delivery and 8 weeks after delivery.
Can an employer deny maternity benefits if the employee has worked for less than 6 months?
Yes. According to Section 46(1), the employee must have worked under the employer for at least 6 months immediately preceding the day of her delivery to be eligible for maternity benefits.
Is a woman entitled to maternity benefits for her third child?
No. Under Section 46(2) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, maternity benefits are not applicable if the woman already has two or more surviving children at the time of delivery; however, she may still be entitled to other leaves as per company policy.
